Working together to build a thriving tourism economy for Cape Town and the Western Cape

 

 

Tourism can become a sustainable sector for generations for Cape Town and the Western Cape.  

 

Over the past 18 months (2018 - 2019) at least five new hotels have opened in the Cape Town.  Across the region, tourists have access to a wide range of accommodation types from hotels, lodges, apartments, hostels, camping and homestays (e.g. Airbnb).

 

The Western Cape boasts an unprecedented range of tourism experiences and attractions.  Over the past three years, world-class culture and heritage, gastronomy and cycling routes have launched.  

 

Access to Cape Town and the Western Cape has spring leapt over the past four years with 15 new routes and 20 route expansions adding 1.5 million two-ways seats into the province.

 

Moreover, despite an enduring drought in 2017 and 2018, the worst in 100 years, international arrivals are up 1.4% year to date (January - August 2018 vs 2019), and domestic visitors are up 2.1% according to Airports Company South Africa (ACSA).  

 

Today, however, potential visitors and conference organisers are spoilt in terms of choosing a destination.  The image of a place is one of the major deciding factors. Moreover, many factors can impact a destination's image, ranging from a friend's experience, local politics to the state of the environment.

 

In 2019 we ran research with 600 travel and tourism businesses to understand what questions their clients were asking about Cape Town and the Western Cape. From the study, it was clear that up-to-date and relevant information regarding safety and security and the water situation was needed.

This website aims to assist the industry and tourism stakeholders with the information requested by their clients. Questions such as:  What are the safety measures in place?  Is there still a drought in Cape Town and the Western Cape? What is Cape Town's value proposition?
